About Oldoinyo Lengai
Oldoinyo Lengai ("Mountain of God" in Maasai) is Tanzania's only active volcano and the world's only carbonatite volcano. Safety Notice
Oldoinyo Lengai is an active volcano - access to the crater may be restricted during periods of increased activity. The climb involves exposed sections requiring surefootedness. All treks must be accompanied by armed Maasai guides due to wildlife presence (including lions and leopards).
Wildlife & Nature
The Lengai area supports diverse wildlife including olive baboons, velvet monkeys, hyenas, lions, leopards, jackals, Grant's gazelles, impalas, and zebras. Over 350 bird species have been recorded around Lake Natron, which is East Africa's primary flamingo breeding ground.
